Consolidation in the Romanian communication industry p2

RDS is close to acquire PCNET and CVR seems to become the star of the next beauty contest. Potential hunters: RDS, Astral or UPC. Or an external player perhaps. Read the context first and then the story.

Well, in Constanta Astral bought two of the major local companies in the past year [cable + internet providers both of them], one of which I am a subscriber of. I gotta say that Astral sucks bad though. The quality of service has gone considerably down since they've taken over. And RCS, they're even worse. We're heading to a disaster in quality with this duopoly - Astral and RCS&RDS.

I agree, both players are pricy and don't have the best customer service. But I think they're still learning the ropes in an emerging industry and in a muddy business environment. They (Astral and RDS) have become big companies in a relatively short period of time and this growth may be have two edges if not dealth with properly. However, sooner or later they will start turning to the customer's problems - RDS already did that by lowering some fees while upgrading the bandwidth. Problem is that the technology adoption (i.e. voip) is still quite low in Romania and the only way for dealing with this problem is a cost-based value proposition - as Romanians are still very price sensitive.
