It appears Iliescu is not very popular within the Romanian community from Montreal. I guess it'd have been too much for the presidential advisors to think why the hell those guys emmigrated in the first place.

There, he only had a bishop tell him to his face (from the pulpit no less) that he runs a country that doesn't follow its own laws and court rulings, where the struggle for justice has yet to be won. Iliescu's answer? He had no answer though he was given the extraordinary opportunity to provide one from the pulpit. There were no boos, no catcalls from the assembled, but that politeness gave him no excuse to reject the criticism out of hand either. The lessons for businessmen are clear. International FDI is the least protected money of all. Wherever laws are not followed, wherever court decisions are ignored with impunity, FDI either does not enter or it requires a stiff risk premium, a premium that every Romanian business ends up paying.
I wouldn't go that far and since I am somewhat in the middle of it I guess I am closer to saying that things are rather grey than white or black. It is true - the premium is there as well but not knowing the business environment means a "stiff" risk for any venture anywhere nowdays. It is a as simple as that.
I think things have improved considerably in the last 4-5 years and that is not Nastase's merit (or his cabinet thereof) but the precedent administration's (which did some heavy lifting as Doug would say). There's still a long way to go, and soon Iliescu will become history, he is just a bad joke now and certainly remains one of the main reasons for Romania being one of the laggards of Europe. Still his message remains true (despite the wooden language): Romania ofers business opportunities.
Iliescu is a bad joke as it is, but PSD is thinking right now of possibly selecting him as future prime minister. Now that will be a DISASTER.
