Tonight I was chatting with one of our business partners about the political situation in Romania nowadays. I was complaining about the lack of difference from the political scene and about how Consumer Joe is swallowing every single thing that is served at the prime time. He was mentioning that it takes time for fresh blood to make it to the ranks and that a revolution could emerge sooner that I would imagine. And then he mentioned that what we need reminds him of the Apple's advert based upon Orwell's 1984. To my shame I had no idea what he was talking about - but then I figured it out. We certainly need that blonde throwing the hammer. :) (clip)

Ah, the 1984 ad! Thanks for that link. I've seen so many excerpts that I've probably seen it three times, but I had never yet watched it from beginning to end. Mm, Ridley Scott. It is good, isn't it. Wonder whatever became of that actress. FWIW, I'm just reading Misha Glenny's _The Rebirth of History_. Written in 1991, it's all about Eastern Europe, and includes a chapter on then-contemporary Romania -- the Revolution, the NSF, the rise of Iliescu, the miners in Bucharest, and all the rest. I don't mean to seem Pollyannaish, but if you read Glenny's bleak description of what passed for free politics and civil society in 1991 Romania, and how miserable the country's prospects seemed then... well, it's hard not to feel at least a tiny flicker of optimism. Romania has come a long, long way since those days, even if there still is a long way to go. Doug M.
You'll undoubtedly remember that the opposition victory in the 1996 elections was largely due to the emerge of nationwide independent media, such as Pro TV. I think it's safe to say that Pro TV won the elections for the CDR. It's so disgusting to see the blonde hammer thrower that they once were, now getting screwed in the a** by the Big Brother at Victoria Palace, and actually liking it. Big Brother is a tad smarter now. He abandoned the miners' bats, and turned to the books. And it looks like he started with Machiavelli :-)
I guess that business is not what it used to be. I was actually zapping yesterday and it's pure and simple horrible - NO CHOICE. It's become so toxic that I will probably teach my kids to browse the internet as early as possible.
On a related note, you may be aware of the recent story of a young journalist from TVR revealing what it's like when cooking the news and presenting the reality to the Consumer Joe. At this level I would say we're lucky enough with a 30% of people making a rational choice at the elections. The level of manipulation in the media channels is absolutely inimaginable.
