There's been several attempts from various society levels including presidential ones for trying to differentiate or even position our country. In vain.
There's even a dedicated website that remained at a similar level as the one that Romanians seem to be best at: endless discussions and/or useless debates. A while ago, the government gave it another try by pitching local shops for consulting for getting a big international name to the task. The offer was poorly prepared so that none of the reputable Romanians names ventured to get in the pitch.
Having this as a background you can now have a look at a white paper about the need and the opportunity for Romania's (re)branding. [via]
ps. Oh yeah, today was the day when Romania got its formal acceptance for being a full EU member. Today Bucharest seems like a deserted city as given the Francophone summit organized here (read a costly Romanian PR gig) everywhere around the downtown area the traffic has been restricted and, just in case, most of the public workers were given three days off. Besides, all schools are closed.
Other than that, in Bucharest it's business as usual. :)

take, now that he's on the top spot @ AOL. :) Been giving a few
interviews myself to the Romanian media lately, the email ones are the ones
that work best, and I always ask to see what's going to go into the article,
to be sure I wasnot misinterpreted.
Some
say that this is inconceivable, if only for the cost of the downloads on the
mobile. And it's not only that, having an iPod is fashion already, giving
status to people.
On the other hand, the one-device-only-in-your-pocket choice seems to be very appealing to a lot of people, and it is hard not to imagine Steve Jobs looking at the existing mobile phones and not trying to figure out something like an iPhone (though lots of rumours and fake have appeared in the last two years regarding a potential Apple phone device).
Until Stevie gives us something tangible Nokia specifically positions the N90 model as a mp3 player.

...with Ryan Air and AirPortugal, possible starting
with this fall.
Real estate is still one of the main investment atractions in Romania. It
seems that things are similar in Argentina.
I was offline most of the weekend but got to read the printed version of the
WSJ -- two things caught my attention and I think are worth noting:
- a review of minimoguls of the internet (I hadn't heard of some of those guys before)
- Wal-Mart is leaving Germany and sells out to Metro. I remember that they also left the Czech Republic sometimes at the end of the 90s.
